picnic mofo

day 4: Newport, Pembrokeshire, Wales
day 5: Canterbury, England

We just got back from Wales! It was such a wonderful trip, and I can't wait to share more about it with you. However, it's much later than I thought (most of today was spent driving) and so I'm going to have to do a quick post if I want to get tonight's entry in before midnight.

Another aspect of eating in my new surroundings is the wonderful market in Canterbury, open 6 days a week by the Canterbury West train station. You can find everything there from local produce (lots of fresh fruits and veggies, but also lots of meat and cheese - be warned!), local juices and ciders, wines, breads, olive oils, and other gourmet foods. In addition, we've got quite a few Asian supermarkets, a Whole Foods, a health food store, and a number of well-stocked ordinary supermarkets. So I'm spoiled for choice. In addition, for our first couple of weeks, we were spoiled by the good weather. Put that all together and you get... another fun picnic!

In the top photo you see a picnic with a fresh baguette, some local yellow and red cherry tomatoes, some Tartex veggie pâté (this stuff is like crack!), and a bottle of extra virgin olive oil. We were able to buy the olive oil in bulk and reuse our bottle. I'm going to have to blog about all these little environmental bonuses at some future date, but suffice it to say, it's easy eating well (even without much kitchen equipment!) and living green here.

When I was in Ireland, I ate like that all the time.

But I've never had Tartex in a tube...I'm so jealous! They only sell it in the US in little tins with a pull-off lid.

That's so great that it is easy to live green there! Of course, Cali is much easier than many other places, but I still feel like I'm fighting against the system so often.

I thought the UK was always rainy, but the weather looks wonderful. I love the little orange tomatoes we've been getting here. Still too hot for a picnic though...

PICNIC! Oh, do I love a picnic. I like that they have bulk olive oil so readily available - I have to drive an hour for it, so I usually just end up buying a new bottle. :-(

Sounds like an amazing trip! Wow, I think I never saw Tartex in a tub like that.

Sounds like you're eating so well! I love your olive oil bottle. I always feel good bringing containers back to the co-op to reuse.

I can't wait to hear more about Wales! It was one of my favorite places to visit over there... spent lots of time in the Snowden area.
And it looks like a perfect picnic!

Asian supermarkets?! Wow, where? I've lived near Canterbury for five years now and I never even thought to look..

Hi jade-rem. The biggest and best Asian market I've seen is on the high street, right past the gate. There is another one on high street that appears to be closing. And then there is a smaller one towards Northgate. I'm sorry I don't know their names at the moment!
