Happy Birthday Daiku!

Today was Daiku's birthday. We started the day with pancakes for breakfast, then had a thoroughly enjoyable junk food dinner involving Boca Chick'n patty sandwiches and tater tots. But the best part of the day, food-wise, was the cake I made to celebrate the occasion, Boston Creme Pie from the Damn Tasty Vegan Baking Guide. This is the third recipe I've made from the book, and the third recipe that I've ended up loving. If you make it, I highly recommend the fresh organic strawberries on top. (Update, 12 July: This cake is even better the next day! The custard really sets and the flavors of the cake and ganache mellow and meld. Next time, I'd consider making it the day before, or even the morning of a celebration and letting it hang out in the fridge for a bit longer than I did.)

Happy birthday to a wonderful person and a wonderful partner! Daiku, I'm so happy to be able to share the funny and twisted adventure that is life with you.

And for you, wonderful blog reader, I leave you with Boston Creme porn galore... enjoy!

Happy birthday to Daiku! And what a special treat for a birthday celebration... yum.

Bazu, in response to your question about the cream puffs, they did not form an air bubble as I hoped they would. I sliced the cream puff in half and made a "sandwich" out of it, and as I said, the texture was not exactly cream puff-like. If you do try your hand at them and you experiment with the leavening, please let me know how it works out! I'm going to try them again once I have some more time on my hands...

Happy Birthday Daiku. Why didn't B and I get any cake? It looks way way too big for just the two of you! We would have made the supreme sacrifice and helped you out with it. LOL

Here's my story: I'm still on my porch silently screaming over this cake. My neighbor comes over to tell me about a show and catches me with my mouth wide open and eyes bugged out over the laptop. He likely thinks I'm nuts until I show him the cake. Then we are both sitting on my porch with our mouths wide open in raptures over this creation. What a wonderful birthday treat!

YUM. That custardy filling looks especially good, I love custardy creme-y stuff. I'm sitting here at the end of a rather tedious day working at thesis (sooo slow). Visiting here is an escape, but now I want a slice of this birthday cake!

Happy b-day to Daiku. Best wishes for another year. :)

I just ate lunch at Lao Village and accidentally left a sweater there. (A sweater in July?) So, I needed to call them. I Yahooed "Lao Village Syracuse" and happened upon your lusciously illustrated blog. Happy Birthday, fellow Syracusan.

Oh. My. God.

that looks amazing! Happy belated bday Daku...

Seriously, I am drooling.

Loved your berry/cherry picking.. the cherries must have been amazing... the cherries in the store have been amazing, so I can only imagine how good they were fresh.

and... I loved your raw experience. I haven't even lasted 1 day raw. I don't have a dehydrator... maybe then I would... who knows? It is interesting to me and I like doing raw meals... but I agree, you will be prying my stove from my cold, dead hands too! hehe...
