some baking, some comfort food

Today's high temperature in Syracuse was 68 degrees- yay!! Most of our snow is gone, gone, gone. Oh, just one thing- tomorrow, we'll be back in the 30's and 40's and we are even going to get some more snow. On the bright side, that means there is still plenty of time for baking and comfort foods to fight off the chill...

Susan V's carrot spice muffins. These muffins were so delicious, I couldn't believe how truly healthy they are- and they were so easy to bake! Make these if you want a satisfying new breakfast or snack option. They tasted so much like carrot cake that I wanted to slather on some sort of cream cheese frosting, but then that would have defeated the whole point, no?

Whole-wheat bread. I saw this recipe, originally from the Frugal Portland Living blog, on Crystal's blog, and I was intrigued. Yes, this was posted back in October- you can see how long it takes me to get around to trying recipes sometimes! (I still haven't gotten around to making no-knead bread yet!) I used white whole wheat flour and the bread turned out really well- although mine had a strange pumpkin orange color to it that I didn't see in Crystal's pictures. No worries- the bread itself was tasty and soft and great toasted with some margarine.

Here is the bread being served with some beans and greens, courtesy of Daiku. This meal was not just comfort-food, it was *really* homemade- the beans were made from scratch, as was the bread! Now if we'd only grown the chard ourselves...

Speaking of comfort foods, I adapted Kathy F's recipe for winter vegetable stew with mustard and chive dumplings- I left out some ingredients I was missing because this recipe looked so good I wanted to try it as soon as I read about it- no time to go shopping for ingredients. I loved the dumplings!

With comfort food like this around, I can handle another week or two of cold weather, I think...

Bazu, you know i'm such a weather wimp, being spoiled as i am in San Diego. 68 degrees is like perfect though. I'm so glad you got a day like that!

How about that BREAD? Ummm... my fave bakery (in Los Angeles, too far for me to go but i still dream of it) could not hold a candle to what i see here, and it's NO-KNEAD?! Crickey, served with the beans and greens! Oh, that is comfort food indeed, Bazu. I love the bowl you have it all in, too. Such a great deep forest green. One of my fave colours. Food as art...

The muffins you made look great. Susan V is quite the creator of some fine, healthy food. Those look really good. I'd have to put some sweet Tofutti cream cheez on there though, i really would!

Yummerz, all. Thanks for sharing this w/us and i wish you warm days and cool nights...

You know, I've never made bread, nor have I ever had a real desire to try, but over the past few weeks, reading about making bread on everyone else's blogs, I'm beginning to think that I'm missing out on something big.

Your comfort food looks really great, especially the white bean soup.

We had a lot of rain yesterday, so almost all the snow is gone. Yay!

Hi Bazu! I'm so happy to hear you liked the muffins! I'm just back from a short vacation with my extended family, so I'm just now catching up on my blog-reading. I'm really thrilled to hear that you got a break from the snow--at least for a little while. Spring will really be here before long.

Everything you make looks so delicious!

Yay! I'm glad you had some nice weather. It got up to 73 here the other day...it was enough to melt all the snow so we could find our Sunday newspaper that got swept up by the plow two weeks ago.

What a lovely loaf of bread. And you can add me to the list of people who haven't gotten around to making the no-knead bread yet either. The beans and chard looks delish. What a great simple meal. YUM!

Oh no, mustard in dumplings! The horror! Just kidding :) Rob would so love those dumplings.

Glad you are getting some warmer weather for a while :) The muffins look yum and the beans and stew look like great comfort food.

68 woo-hoo! It's been pretty warm here, too, although it's colder again today. I wish we could just have a steady rise in temperature instead of this up and down. Ah, global warming...

I haven't tried the no-knead bread, either, and I don't know what's taking me so long. One of these days I really will make it - it looks so delicious and easy!

Oh I really want to try that winter vegetable stew. It looks so comforting...but I'd better hurry before the temps spike back up into the 60's!

Everyone is getting ready for Spring and here I am dreading the thought I am about to go into Winter :(

I really must start trying to make bread again. I tried ages ago and it was such a flop I gave up on it.

I'm glad all that snow is gone. I guess the best thing about cold weather is staying warm with comfort foods. The muffins look incredibly good and so does the bread. Do you think the molasses made it orangey?

The beans and stew look great too. Mustard and chive dumplings - yum!

Wasn't yesterday gorgeous?! Now the temp's going back dwn again tonite...brrrrr. But at least we know that spring is on its way.

Your food looks mouthwatering as usual. The chive dumplings really caught my attention. and that bread is simply perfect.

I'm glad to hear that the snow went away, even if it was just temporary. I've been feeling guilty as I lie out in the sun with my pets - picturing Daiku walking through knee-high snow.

Also, the muffins look amazing... and anything with the word "dumplings" in it has got to be great!

Looks like another amazing spread! I haven't made bread in ages. I used to really enjoy it, though. Yours looks like it came out beautifully. Mmmmm...

Winter isn't all bad, I guess. At least you get to enjoy tummy warming goodies. :)

Ooh, a new bread recipe to try--how exciting! Congratulations on a day of warmish weather--you've had a taste of what to look forward to, and I know that that can lift your spirits. All of your food looks great, but I would mostly go for the beans and greens--and homemade beans is the ONLY way to go!

I want some of those beans and bread! They both looks so good. Definitely comfort food.

I'm inspired by your bread-making :) Everything looks really good!

Bazu, I love your new blog template. It is so bright and fresh looking!!

Daiku's beans and greens are jumping out at me - that does look SO comforting - and entirely nourishing. Now, get your garden ready for that chard!! :)

Hi Bazu! Love the new look. It's much easier to read. I can't imagine why I haven't tried those carrot spice muffins. I have some carrot pineapple bread in the freezer and I need to eat that up first but as soon as that's gone, I'm making these for sure. I'm glad you tried the bread. We usually make ours in loaf pans so it's more like sandwich bread but I like the idea of free-forming it. I'm so ready for warm weather too. We have promises of 70 + degree temps all next week so I'm pretty excited.

I haven't had dumplings since I was a little kid. I'll definitely have to try that recipe out.

As always, everything looks amazing.

Bazu-you always find that silver lining- and hear's to as much comfort food as possible before spring finally arrives!

The beans look hearty and super satisfying, especially with that great loaf you made.
