eating well: new york city & long island
First of all, I want to thank you for your comments on my last post. You guys seriously had me crying at some points- thank you so much for your words of support! Now, I'm more determined than ever to continue blogging and try to meet as many of you in person as possible! And, for those of you who said you want to see more posts, I promise to post every single day for this upcoming week. {hugs everybody}
Last weekend, Daiku and I drove down to New York City for a last-minute work trip. But hey, I'm not complaining--I still got to see my favorite city, hang out with my old friends, and even meet 2 new friends!
Look what my friend Dorota found on the fire escape of the West Village apartment she's house-sitting- a mama dove, watching vigilantly over her nest...
...in which two little chicks had just hatched! They were beyond adorable, and I hope their mama didn't mind me oohing and aahing over them and photographing them too much.
I had to go to Long Island to interview one of my old professors. This gave me a chance to go to Stony Brook, where I'd gone to college many moons ago. In the above photo, you can see Long Island Sound from the town of Old Field. This is where Daiku used to live- walking distance from the beach! If you had super vision, you could see Bridgeport, CT on the other side of the water. After the interview (which lasted 3 hours- whew!) Daiku and I hit the Green Cactus Grill, one of our favorite hangouts when we lived here.
Green Cactus is a huge chain now, but back in the day, "ours" was one of only 2. The food here is typical American-style Mexican food- tacos, burritos, quesadilllas, etc. But their food is exceedingly fresh and flavorful. Daiku got the bean and cheese burrito, and I revisited my youth by ordering exactly what I used to get back in the day: the vegetarian burrito (hold the cheese). I chose the pinto beans to go with the rice, salsa, and guacamole. Delicious!
But my favorite thing about Green Cactus is their huge salsa bar. Here, you can get unlimited amounts of fresh pico de gallo, fiery roasted salsa, pickled vegetables and jalapenos, salsa, and salsa verde. (In the above photo, you can see the pico de gallo in the front, and the roasted salsa and jalapenos in the background.) I can just eat this stuff with a spoon, like a huge salad. In fact, I'm a bit embarrassed to admit, back in college, my friends and I used to sneak huge amounts of this stuff back home with us!
Soon, it was back to New York City, where we had arranged to meet VKO and her sister, SKO for dinner at Red Bamboo! I just love meeting blogger friends in real life, and VKO and SKO were the sweetest and coolest dinner companions.
Here's all of our dinners (clockwise from top left): SKO's roti appetizer with curry dipping sauce, calamari appetizer, my unagi don, SKO's sweet 'n sour chicken, VKO's fish and chips, and Daiku's Philly cheesesteak sandwich.
We all liked our dinners, but agreed that the sweet 'n sour chicken was the winner of the evening, with perfect texture and flavor. All the other faux fish dishes had realistic flaky texture- the calamari tasted freakishly like shrimp! Daiku thought the seitan in the cheesesteak was good, but that the sandwich as a whole could have use more pizazz. I loved my unagi don, especially accompanied by the fresh veggies and pickled ginger that it came with.
But the best part of the evening was the company--we all had so much fun chatting and getting to know each other, I can't wait to do this again, in the city or in Syracuse.
Here are VKO (left) and SKO (right) aren't they adorable?
Here is a photo of us together. VKO surprised me with a gift- I had mentioned to her that I have never tried fermented tofu ("stinky" tofu) and she gave me a jar- I was so touched! I haven't tried it yet, but I'm really looking forward to it. That's the bag I'm happily holding up in the photo.
And finally, the obligatory food blogger's photo of a fellow food blogger photographing her food. As VKO said on her blog, vegan bloggers unite!

Oh Bazu, we really had such a great time with you & Daiku!
Now I have even more incentive to come visit Syracuse you guys, Farm Sanctuary, my cousin and Booboo's birthplace- I am making Fcat take me as soon as I come back.
I also loved that you guys have lived everywhere. Also love the montage of our meal.
The mother dove & babies are the cutest. Not so sure that I am that adorable, but SKO sure is.
Get to that stinky tofu girl!

it's so wonderful to read about my fellow vegan bloggers getting a chance to meet in person - how fun!! I'm glad your trip to New York was enjoyable, and that you got to meet VKO
Aw, from reading her post and reading yours, it looks like you and VKO had such a great time! And the food that you shared looks amazing. You're so lucky!
Happy belated bloggervisary! How cool that you got to meet a fellow blogger. It'll be interesting to see how you use that stinky tofu!
Thanks for the kind words on my post -- if you have any budget tips, I'd love for you to share them too.
I hope you have a great week!
gotta love hitting it off with fellow bloggers! your pics are getting better and better, Bazu.
Hello Bazu!
I was informed by a relation of mine that you had posted about a certain blogger meet up/dinner at Red Bamboo, and ordered to read said post (just kidding, I would have read it anyway!)
Your skyline pic is great...and the doves are adorable.
It was so cool to meet you and Daiku- you guys were so nice and funny and interesting. :D
And I definitely agree with you- while everything at RB was pretty tasty, the sweet and sour chicken was amazing.
Have fun with that stinky tofu and give my love to those deceivingly non-cuddly cats of yours!
♥
woo hoo!
i love reading about all these bloggie meet ups. fun fun!!
I gotta make it to the east coast and meet you all myself!
Yeaah, you met VKO and her sister! That is super awesome. Looks like lots of fun and yummy looking food. (how'd you do that photo montage?) It's fun to go back and visit places from days gone by... I'll have the chance to do that soon in San Diego. and yes, salsa bars rule!
I'm so glad you got to meet VKO (As you know, I just met her). It's so nice to put a face to the name, isn't it?
All the food looks amazing. Omniman had those calamari at red Bamboo and they were freakishly realistic. Now he wants to try the fish & chips.
Hoepfully, we'll get to meet one of these days....
What a fun post!!!
Sounds like a wonderful trip you and Daiku had! Anyplace that has a salsa bar must be good, and how cool that you used to frequent one of the originals (kind of like being the number one fan of an indie band before they make it big and are ruined by fame and money). And of course, how much fun to meet a fellow vegan blogger! I love both of your blogs and it was fun to read about the experience on both of your posts.
It sounds like you had a great time. I love trying out new faux dishes at restaurants. I don't know about the faux calamari, though... There's something about the smell of seafood (and even the fake seafood stuff) that creeps me out a little bit.
The dove is just beautiful, and her little chicks are adorable. :) We don't have doves here, as far as I know, so I find them rather 'exotic'.
I've never been to Green Cactus, but it sounds great. I'd love the salsa bar!
Red Bamboo looks like a lovely restaurant as well, I'm glad to see that you had a great time.
That burrito is making me hungry-- and I just ate a big lunch.
I'm glad you had a good trip to NYC. Those chicks are so adorable-- I love finding little bits of nature in a city as urban as manhattan. And aren't VKO and SKO great? I met them last week for some fabulous desserts and conversation at the Candle Cafe. This was my first time meeting a vegan blogger! (Or any blogger, actually.) Anyway, you should let me know next time you'll be in the city!
happy belated anniversary!!
I love red bamboo but have never had the sweet and sour chicken..i'll have to try that the next time i go. The food photos from green catus grill are making me drool they look so delicous.
JENNA
I bought fermented tofu once and trust me; DON'T DO IT! ;p
I hated it and threw all of it out once I'd taken a bite. Never again. promise to blog about it though, you might be more open minded than I am.
Vegan bloggers taking photos of other vegan bloggers taking photos...how fun is that?! Food looks fabulous, too.
How fun to get to meet VKO and her sister AND to have dinner at Red Bamboo! I haven't been to NY in years and I'm dying to go back.
How amazing to meet VKO and sistah. i love this post. Very cool. Those birds and the chicks made my heart melt, just FYI...
Green Cactus rocks!
If you're ever back on LI, check out these other places! I just started a list for vegetarians
