apple angst

I've been in a bit of a dour mood, which is why I haven't been blogging. The reason for my angst? Apples!

This past weekend, my two best friends Dorota and Sharon came up to visit. This was going to be a summery weekend, complete with drive-in movies, tons of food, and peach and blueberry picking. Except that Saturday turned out to be a cool, gray day and none of us felt like driving that far to get to the peach orchards. So, what did we find instead? The first day of apple season!

Even though going apple-picking (and apple wine and hard cider tasting) was fun, I feel that summer came to a screeching halt as soon as we did that. I mean, apple pie, apple butter, apple cider, those are all Autumn and Winter things! Whine, whine. So now I am sitting with a fridge full of Paula Red apples, but no desire to do anything with them, because to do so would be to admit defeat, to admit the end of summer.

I don't care that I went apple picking, that August is almost over, or that school has just begun. I will find peaches and blueberries before it's too late- mark my words!

Meanwhile, I'll wallow in my Arctic Autumn Apple Angst some more, while you enjoy these photos of us frolicking around the Beak and Skiff Apple Orchards. As you eat your peach pies and bask in the summer heat, please think of me up here in the frozen Tundra!

...my Turkish girlfriend just came back from the journey to her hometown, telling just endless horror stories about how hot and dry it is everywhere (daylight around 45 degrees Celsius, at night 36 degrees Celsius), how there is water shortage in her home town, how the seas and rivers are almost dry... we are so lucky to have cool weather and rain... :) ---->

it has been extremely humid and rainy in my "neck of the woods" - I envy the fall-like weather that you are experiencing, haha (and the apples!! I cannot WAIT to go apple-picking soon!!)

Those pictures look exactly like apple picking weather--though I remember it looking like that in october, not August!

It's chilly here too!

Mmm, apples may be fall-and-winter food, but they're sure yummy! I haven't eaten one all summer... Too busy stuffing myself with berries and peaches. :)

I feel your angst! I don't want summer to be over, I suffer from SAD, but even so I can't ever say no to apples! Swedish apples are very thin skinned and aromatic and they only stay in season for a short while. You can't buty them in the store all year round because they're delicate and their thin skins can't take much of a beating before the apples go bad. It's a shame because the apples we get in the stores the other parts of the year really taste nothing like these fall apples. Anyway, I'm making applesauce right now. Can't say no to apples!

Do you have a recipe for apple butter? It doesn't exist here, so I'll have to make my own, I've decided.

I think I must be one of the few that actually gets really excited when the days start to cool off at the end of the summer. Autumn is my very favorite season, though. I absolutely cannot wait to start baking apple pies, apple dumplings, etc. How awesome to have somewhere that you can go pick apples! I've never seen anything other than berry picking around here.

Unlike you I want the summer to be over. I love the feel of that crisp autumn air, apple picking, and leaves changing color. I can't wait to go apple picking.

I am so sad for you. I love the heat of summer and hate the cold of winter and even the cool of autumn! Luckily I can still find and enjoy plenty of peaches and blueberries. And I eat an apple nearly every day.

I used to pick apples as a kid (we had a tree). I'm ready for fall to start, though!

Those apples look gorgeous....but I hear you. I hate the thought of summer ending. I feel like it hasn't begun yet. Well, three more official weeks of summer are left anyway.

Nice that you got to hang with good friends. You obviously sure can pick 'em!

Your apple-picking outing sounds like fun but I totally agree...I'm not ready for summer to be over yet. Thankfully, apples keep for a while so you have a little time to use them up.

Ah, Bazu, I sympathize with your sadness about summer coming to an end...and I love the photos in this post. Must say that for myself I'm glad spring is on the way here...not a moment too soon!

I'm sure there will be a last blast of summer, just for you! In the meantime, I am totally jealous that apple season has begun and I'm still in summer mode! It looks like you all had a fun trip.

Great pictures! I do love eating apples straight off the trees.

What signals the end of summer for me are pumpkins. When I start seeing them, I know summer is offically over :( So we can squeak out a few more weeks. Right?

Oh, you are so lucky Bazu. Marty and I just love apples and every season we usually buy a few (yes, a few) bushels of them. But, this year there was a big freeze after Spring had already sprung so most of the crops were destroyed. We can't get apples anywhere and are so sad. Enjoy your lovely apples and think of your not so fortunate friends here in TN who would give anything for the opportunity to go apple picking.

Oh, how I miss apple picking on the East Coast. I want to go now! It just holds so many special memories for me. Jeff and I have searched high and low out here, but apple orchards just aren't as good, and it's not the same without that crisp New England air.
