we interrupt these travel updates for...

...some images from last week's inauguration! (well I guess it's still traveling, but not in chronological order...) I was one of the 2-3 millions of people crammed in the national mall, freezing my bum off, glad for every moment:

record-breaking crowds in the Metro...

and in the streets

cute kids in the National Mall (we got on the Mall because we were there before 7 a.m... but that meant about 5 hours of waiting in the below-freezing temps...)

people struggling for better views...

...seeing ourselves on the jumbotron

Barack Obama's face melding with the crowds...

...Biden taking the oath...

Obama getting sworn in... more or less smoothly! (wtf, Justice Roberts??)

...jubilant crowds witnessing history...

...jubilant us!!!!!... (my cousin Melissa, me, and fellow blogger Karyn)

...watching as people watched the inaugural address...

cooing at the police horses everywhere

...shivering as we spent a couple of hours getting off the mall! (crowd control was much better organized before than after the event)

but all the cold and aching was worth it to get to eat treats (and drink HOT COFFEE!) at Sticky Fingers afterwards...

Pretty much an ideal Washington DC day, wouldn't you say? I'm so glad I was there and part of this festive and moving day. Gobama!

So very cool that you got to go to the inauguration... I'm not sure my Texas blood would have withstood the cold! But with Sticky Fingers at the end of the day I might have pulled through...

Your photos are great! I think you were closer to the jumbotron than Leah was. She got a lot of flag interference.

whoa! what fun! If only I'd known you were in the crowd, I would have waved at you on TV. How exciting to be there for the big day. That's awesome. The whole affair is pretty freaking cool, right?

Wow, you are a brave one! Looks like a fun and freezing day though. But, do tell, what is that marvelous creation in the last photo from Sticky Fingers? I am drooling.

Awesome pics!

I'm surprised I didn't run into you at Sticky Fingers since I pretty much live there. Their sticky buns are to die.

Oh bazu, I'm so jealous that you were there! A few of my friends from Brisbane flew over to see it all happen. I can't wait until they get home so I can hear all about it!

How great you managed to get to the Inauguration. I watched it from this end as we got full coverage in South Africa.

Everyone everywhere is looking forward to having Obama as a new World leader. He has a huge job to put things back in order.
