eat, grade, repeat

Hello to everybody from beautiful New Jersey! I'm here at the College of New Jersey for a week, reading AP art history exams from high school students all around the country. The schedule is pretty full (work from 8-4:30 for 6 days) and I don't have my computer with me, so I don't get to blog (or see other blogs!) a lot.

One thing they realize here is that for someone to be able to read hundreds and hundreds of high school essays, you have to feed them well. So the above mobile phone photo is an example of how I get to eat at the college cafeteria. This was today's lunch: a big salad of mixed greens, kidney beans, broccoli, blueberries, oranges, onions, tofu, and shredded carrot. There is also some tomoatoes, cucumbers, and hummus that are not visible. I used oil and vinegar for dressing. On the side is a fruit plate with watermelon, blackberries, and honeydew. Also, a slice of rye bread.

Here is a list of some other fun vegan foods I've discovered in the cafeteria:

  • veggie chili, chock full of beans
  • a tomato basil soup
  • smart balance margarine (the kind with no dairy!)
  • tabbouleh
  • Nutter-Butter cookies (ok, not exactly health food... but no animal ingredients that I know of)

There- I feel I have fulfilled my food blogging obligations!

So that is basically my day: eat, grade, repeat. It's fun, but exhausting. I try not to go crazy with caffeine, but I have to have some tea and coffee-otherwise I find myself dozing off while reading the 100th essay about the exact same painting!

Right now, Daiku is in St. Louis, visiting family. He promises me that he's taking interesting pictures, so hopefully by this weekend, we'll have some things to blog about. I can't wait to get home, so I can catch up on all your blogs! I hope everyone is having a fantastic time in blogland.

Not that your lunch doesn't look good...but how does one get such a job? I would love to get paid to read some AP Comparative Politics exams in New Jersey. :)

And I promise I will do the meme. Perhaps tonight, actually.

Don't work too hard, Bazu. It's hopeful that the cafeteria has vegan options amid all the SAD stuff.

I'm going away for a week, but if I weren't, I would invite you over for dinner. The College of NJ is not very far from Philly.

See you on June 25.

oh, man! I wish they had that kind of stuff at ASU! Although good food is the least they could do for you for all of that grading. Good Luck!

The food looks good! And good luck with that grading, it must be soo difficult sometimes. My caretaker (I work as an assistant to handicapped people) used to be a teacher, she told me that since she got ill (she has ALS, it kills you, slowly) she's been lying awake at night thinking of everything she's done wrong in her life and that she wishes she could change. Among those things were grading students, she keeps regretting grades she's given people, maybe she was too hard on them. Not to put any pressure on you ;)

That lunch looks good. Sounds like they have nice options. How did you come upon a job like that? I'm in music ed, I wonder if that sort of thing will be a job option for me.

Actually, I found this really interesting, because my 13 year old is attending two different "camps" this summer at university campuses, and I'm worried about what she'll eat....let's hope they just as many great options where she's going!

Definitely some great options for a school cafeteria. Ahhh, I remember taking AP exams in high school, so glad my test taking days are over! Have fun grading and looking forward to your next post!

Wow, so you're the one who grades the AP exams!! ::quivers in her shoes:: You people instill fear into every AP student in America! LOL

I'm glad to see that you're eating well!

It's sure nice to see those healthy options at a school cafeteria! My mom used to grade assessment tests, but her stints lasted 3 months. At least you only have a week.

Your cafeteria food actually looks good - much, much better than when I was in college. Don't work too hard, Bazu!

I wish I had cafeteria food like that when I was in school. Wishing you safe travels and no writer's cramp from all that grading. :)

I always wondered who was grading my AP exams back in high school! I am glad to know that they actually do have "real people" reading them!

Good luck and I hope the cafeteria continues to offer such good options!

I took AP art history in high school but passed on taking the exam. My teacher was soooooooooo boring that I learned nothing from her. But of course now I wish I had just studied more on my own. Maybe one of these days I will. Hope Jersey treated ya well. I live here and have no idea where the College of New Jersey is. Have fun. Give good grades!

I know exactly how you feel! For a while I had a job scoring 5th grade essays with a national testing company. Some of them were really great essays, which made reading 200 a day worth it.

My daughter took 3 APs, but not Art History, so I don't suppose you'll come across hers.

Way to seek out those vegan options! If I remember correctly, when I was in college they actually had a special vegan section of the cafeteria...usually one or two hot dishes plus whatever was on the salad bar. Oh, and they kept the soymilk there as well. I often ate it even though I wasn't even vegetarian at the time. Looking back, that special vegan section was probably pretty revolutionary - a lot of colleges still don't have anything like it (this was at SUNY Plattsburgh, not Binghamton).

With all those fresh fruits and veggies I see, I'd say you're gearing up for your raw food month! ;)
