a debate of great importance

sometimes, you think you know someone. you think you know them well. and then you find that you have deep, fundamental differences. this is how I felt when I found out that some of my closest friends ... (gah. it's so hard to even write about this)... DON'T like raisins. poor, sweet, delicious, nutritious raisins. nature's candy. a huge part of any trail mix. sigh.

but this gets even more personal when this irrational aversion to raisins messes with the childhood tradition known as ants on a log. (most Americans are familiar with this treat: celery sticks filled with peanut butter and topped with raisin "ants").

Here's me and Pandacookie battling over whether to go with TRADITIONAL, COMFORTING, HONEST ants on a log or blaspheming them by excluding raisins in lieu of chocolate. (um, thereby turning this nutritious and innocent snack into a den of caloric inequity). But I digress. Being the diplomatic vegans that we were, we made both.

Down with raisins!

Okay so I know I hate tea and then there's the whole marmite thing but raisins are yummy and awesome! (Celery on the other hand...)

Honestly, when I eat a raisin I feel like I'm eating a big, bloated, dead bug. Hardly appetizing, plus I think raisins just plain taste gross.

On the other hand, chocolate and celery doesn't sound like the best combo. What about red/fire ants on a log? You could use dried cranberries!

Sorry, I have to go with chocolate. Maybe if they're golden raisins, but that wouldn't look like ants on a log. More like roaches on a log, which would be absolutely disgusting and I can't believe I just typed it so let us never speak of it again.

I only like raisins when they are nice and chewy, which they just so happen to be on ants on a log, so yes please to raisins. Chocolate is not an option!

What about chocolate AND raisins together on the log?! Now THAT sounds delish!

the idea of eating chocolate with CELERY nauseates me.

If I was doing a chocolate version, I'd have to go with a banana. Chocolate on celery just seems so wrong!

i loooove raisins, but when i was out of 'em, and wanted to do ants on a log, i used dates. still very tasty.

Love raisins, love peanut butter, HATE celery. I'll have my ants on a banana-log instead.

Ants on a log with chocolate is just plain wrong.

Raisins forever!

You simply CANNOT make ants on a log without raisins!

chocolate and celery? nooooooooooo. but also, i do not name food after insects.

Chocolate and celery sounds like a horrible combination, but I had to pick chocolate because that's how much I hate raisins.

Chocolate and celery? Ew. Although, I guess celery is relatively neutral-tasting, so maybe it would work . . . what did you think of the flavor, Bazu?

RAISINS!!!

Obviously, I love chocolate, but I'm sure as hell not gonna waste my daily chocolate allocation by eating it on top of celery. Especially not when raisins are so magically delicious and nutritious.

poopiebitch said...

Um, yeah. Raisins all the way. (sorry panda!)

The answer is obvious - CHOCOLATE! To be fair, chocolate basically wins any competition it is ever in....EVER. You can't compare. And chocolate and peanut butter is THE PERFECT flavor combination. I have nothing against raisins but they just can't compete with chocolate.

I cannot believe I did not even get an honorable mention for showing you the way of the delicious lazer shark on a log (as the chocolate counterpart to the raisin is known). I see how it is.

I'm sorry, Meghan, did you say something? I only hear people on the East Coast...

Ok, raisins are gross. I dislike them and try to avoid them at all costs.

Though, I'm with the folks that are concerned about the chocolate celery combination.

How about dried cranberries?

Look, I'm all for the choco/pb combo, but chocolate subbed for raisins on ants on a log is nothing short of blasphemy.

I don't discriminate- I love both!

I know I'm the odd one out here, but I say "neither." You ladies can snarf 'em all up by yourselves. ;)

I'm pleased someone thinks I'm famous.
And no, I am not fond on raisins. The key to this poll is to ditch the raisins and celery and eat peanut butter and chocolate together possibly in cup or cookie form.

Chocolate with celery sounds gross! Why mess with the perfection of the original recipe, I say.

Sooo.. what if the issue is celery? I hate it!

i love raisins and trail mix- but if i have to vote, chocolate wins over anything! even when it's paired with celery ;)

I'm almost always cool with subbing chocolate for raising, especially in cookies and such, but on ants on a log??? No. The raisins are the ants. Plus, chocolate and celery sounds pretty gross.
